Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease characterised by breakdown of joint cartilage and underlying bone, resulting in pain, stiffness, swelling and limited mobility in the affected joints. It is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of adults daily.

How our Exercise Physiologists can help:

Assessment – Our exercise physiologists conduct a comprehensive 60-minute evaluation, including medical history, review of imaging (X-rays, MRI), assessment of joint symptoms (pain, stiffness, swelling), physical function, mobility, and quality of life measures.

Exercise Prescription – Based on the assessment, an individualised exercise program is developed tailored to the specific joints affected, severity of OA, limitations, and goals. This may involve low-impact aerobic activities, strength training, range of motion exercises, and education.

Arthritis Management Program – Exercise physiologists play a key role in structured exercise programs as part of a comprehensive approach to managing osteoarthritis. These programs aim to reduce joint pain/stiffness, improve mobility, strength and cardiovascular fitness.

Monitoring and Progression – Close monitoring of joint symptoms, exercise responses, mobility, and safety precautions are done during sessions. The program is adjusted and progressed based on the individual’s changing needs and tolerance.

Education – Providing education on the benefits of exercise for arthritis, joint protection techniques, activity pacing, weight management, and promoting long-term adherence to an active lifestyle.

Collaboration – Our exercise physiologists will work closely with our onsite physiotherapists and if needed, will work closely with rheumatologists, GPs, orthopaedic specialists, occupational therapists and other professionals for an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to osteoarthritis management.

Benefits:

  1. Reduced joint pain, stiffness and improved mobility.
  2. Increased muscle strength around affected joints.
  3. Better cardiovascular fitness and weight management.
  4. Improved physical function and independence with daily activities.
  5. Guidance on safe, low-impact exercise to minimise joint stress.
  6. Support for lifestyle behaviour changes to improve overall joint health.

Exercise physiologists play a vital role in managing osteoarthritis by developing and implementing individualised exercise programs as part of a multidisciplinary approach to reduce symptoms, improve physical function and quality of life.
